Amy Ross

My passion for photography began at the age of 8 when my grandparents bought me a Kodamatic Instant Camera for my birthday. The 1st photo I took was an amateur’s accident, my dog going to the bathroom. Ooops! It made my parents, who were going through a hard time, laugh. I later pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Visual and Performing Arts to hone my technical and visual storytelling abilities.

The moments I choose to capture aim to connect the viewer to something learnable. I find that Photography is one of the most effective tools I can use to momentarily interrupt a viewer’s pattern of thought and interject a shift in focus of awareness onto something else. I’m compelled to take photos that guide viewers toward temporarily stepping into a story or an emotion. I consider myself a documentarian.

Story

The city of Lisbon seems to draw nearly everyone in to explore the beauty, the architecture, the pairing of natural spaces and scenic viewpoints where the story of life in Lisbon is unfolding. As I explored the story of life in Lisbon, I began to encounter and pick up on the various intricacies and ways in which the Portuguese People believe in “THE STORY OF MONEY”. All societies have a “money story” that influences financial activity and that serves as the foundation of an economy. One of the major talking points that I come across whenever I meet a new person in Lisbon has more often than not been around the issues of affordable housing in Lisbon and then the challenges of other living costs. Through my photography I am on a journey to uncover, investigate, and learn the finer details of “THE STORY OF MONEY” in Portugal and how people’s beliefs in that story support, nourish, hurt, and/ or work to the detriment of the city of Lisbon. My aim is to capture the parts of Lisbon’s “money mindset” running in the background and offer something to consider and reflect upon in the ways in which we stand in our beliefs around “THE STORY OF MONEY”.
